In fact, we can learn a lot about how and why we developed our own language system by understanding how other species have evolved their own. Some species communicate with sound, others by smell, gesture, magnetism, facial expression, electricity or bio-luminescence. Many, including us, communicate with a combination of different senses and affects. Unfortunately, it's just our bad luck that we haven't figured out a way to understand what the others are saying. However, large strides have been made in the past several years to bridge this gap and the results are often amazing!

Join us for an engaging discussion of the ways elephants, whales & birds communicate!

Christopher Clark

As the I.P. Johnson Director of the Bioacoustics Research Program (BRP) at Cornell University, Chris oversees and directs a vigorous multi-disciplinary program. BRP develops digital recording equipment, computer software, and algorithms that are used by scientists around the world to study animal communication and to monitor the health of wildlife populations. Dr. Clark's own research has shown that humanity's din in the oceans could be blocking whales' courtship songs and population recovery.

Katy Payne

Katy began her career studying the evolving songs of the humpback whale. She shifted her focus to elephants in 1984, when she and two colleagues discovered infrasonic calling in elephants by recording at a zoo. The studies that followed from this discovery have shown that elephants use their low-frequency calls to coordinate their social behavior over long distances. She founded The Elephant Listening Project (ELP) in 1999, and was the leader of the project until 2006, when she officially retired.

Katy is now writing a book about forest elephants, and continues to play a critical role in all ELP's activities. In 2004, Payne's initial recordings of elephants were selected as one of 50 recordings chosen that year by the Library of Congress to be added to the National Recording Registry. She is the author of Silent Thunder: In the Presence of Elephants.
