Undergraduate Research

The abstracts of students who participate in the Spring Conference and/or receive DURF grants are published each year in "Inquiry," the undergraduate research journal of the College.

Deans' Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF)

The Dean’s Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF) has provided hundreds of students with funding to support research projects in our many disciplines. CAS freshmen, sophomores, juniors and first-term seniors are eligible to apply for grants which range from $250 to $2,000, depending on the budget they submit to fund their research projects. Students can apply for (1) individual research grants; (2) team research grants; (3) Freshman and Sophomore Training (FAST) awards that are specifically designed to provide funds needed to learn fundamental research skills; and (4) conference grants to attend national or international meetings to present work. The next deadline for filing an application for a DURF grant is April 1, 2009. Applications for conference grants, however, are accepted throughout the year. Selection is made by a faculty committee. All of these
applications need to be submitted online at http://cas.nyu.edu/page/ug.DeansResearchFund.

Undergraduate Research Conference

The College takes seriously the role of research in the liberal arts education of undergraduates. Students regularly benefit from direct contact with our research faculty and are empowered and encouraged to conduct their own inquiries. All undergraduates at the University are invited to participate in and present their research at the College’s 35th annual Undergraduate Research Conference on Friday, April 17, 2009. Projects showcasing undergraduate work in the Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities are welcome. The work may have been done in connection with a course or as independent or supervised study.
An important part of the application process is the research abstract. Each student or team must submit a single-spaced abstract of 150 to 200 words. The language used should be understood not only by someone knowledgeable in the field but also by a reasonably informed non-specialist. The abstract should address the problem or question under investigation, the methods used, and (anticipated or achieved) results and conclusions. The project mentor should review and approve this abstract before it is submitted. For team presentations, only one abstract is required, although each team member must complete the application form.
A faculty selection committee will determine the Conference schedule of presentations. Presentations at the Conference can be made by individuals or teams and are either by poster or by talk. Those students selected for talks should prepare a presentation no more than eight to ten minutes long.
Applications to participate in the Conference are available online.

CAS Undergraduate Research Opportunities

The College has launched a new website for students who are interested in exploring the numerous research opportunities available at NYU. They should visit https://www.nyu.edu/cas/ugresearch/. This searchable site provides information about faculty research interests and projects in which undergraduates may participate. It also describes internships and funding opportunities, and has links to other CAS undergraduate research initiatives.
