Environmental Studies/Gallatin Partnership

Beginning with the 2009-2010 academic year, students in the Gallatin School of Individualized Studies who are interested in Environmental Studies have the option of participating in the ES-Gallatin Partnership, a new agreement between the Gallatin School and the Environmental Studies Program in the College of Arts and Science. This agreement will allow students to complete an individualized concentration in Gallatin in the usual way while also selecting a series of Environmental Studies courses and becoming apart of the Environmental Studies Program community.

Students who participate will become eligible to take the V36.0900 Capstone Seminar offered by the Environmental Studies Program. When they graduate, students will receive a note on their transcripts indicating that they have completed the ES-Gallatin Partnership. Students may formally sign up to join in this Partnership, with their adviser's approval, beginning in the second semester of their sophomore year, and no later than the completion of their 80th credit.

Gallatin students who participate in the Partnership will select five courses (18-20 credits) that will include:

  • V36.0100 Environmental Systems Science (a prerequisite for a number of ES electives)
  • V36.0101 Environment and Society (a prerequisite for a number of ES electives)
  • Two 3-4 credit elective courses in ES. A list of courses that will allow a student to participate in the Partnership has been compiled by ES and Gallatin, and it includes those Gallatin courses in the field of Environmental Studies broadly understood. To see a list of possible courses, visit http://environment.as.nyu.edu/object/environment.coursedistribution
  • V36.0900 Environmental Studies Capstone Senior Seminar, taken in the senior year, provided students have fulfilled or are fulfilling the other requirements.
As part of the agreement with the ES Program, ES will reserve a small number of spaces in V36.0100 and V36.0101 for Gallatin Students. Access to these places is controlled by Gallatin, not Environmental Studies. In addition, ES will allow Gallatin students to register for V36 electives during the first week of registration (when registration is typically closed to non-ES majors). Conversely, Gallatin will reserve spaces for ES majors in K courses designated as Environmental Studies electives. Gallatin students should note there are limited spaces in ES courses. If there are more students than available places in these courses, students will either be asked to modify their academic plan or be placed on a waitlist. This Partnership is different from taking a minor in Environmental Studies, since the ES minor does not include the V36.0900 Capstone Seminar.

To participate in this Partnership, students must be in good academic standing and must submit this form, outlining their academic plan for completing all five courses. Students should notify Gallatin of any subsequent changes to their academic plan. Please direct all questions about the Partnership and course access to Gallatin Advising.
